News: Boko Haram has failed, we will see their end - Buhari Speaks

Major General Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress has condemned the recent Boko Haram terrorist attacks in Kano and Jos, the two historic cities that are known for their rich cultural and religious heritage, stating that Nigeria and Nigerians will see their end.

“Once again, those who seek to influence our way of life, modify our faith and our most sacred core values, have struck, leaving in their wake lives brutally cut short, limbs badly broken and dreams forced to fade away,” Buhari said.

“But these people, whose actions are not sanctioned by any religion and who subscribe to no known decent values, will not succeed. Our people are resilient and strong, and our nation is capable, based on our rich human and material resources, of successfully tackling these nihilists.

“We will together see the end of them and their reign of terror. They have failed because Nigeria will remain strong and united in the face of what has now become an almost daily infliction of terror on a defenceless people. Women, children and the aged are not spared by these barbaric purveyors of horror, intimidation and panic. No religion condoles the killings of such vulnerable and innocent people, hence we are sure these terrorists profess to none of the world’s great religions, much as they seek to mask their actions with the cloak of religion.

“Because their ideals are primordial and whatever cause they claim to be pushing is not just, they will not succeed. In spite of their terror, our respective faith and how we practice them will flourish and expand. Our reputation as a people of deep faith and peaceful religious coexistence will shine through, it will not diminish, it will not be forfeited.”
Buhari commiserated with the victims and their family members.

“To my long-suffering fellow citizens who have borne the brunt of these almost daily senseless attacks, I say help is on the way. Terror must and will be defeated. All it requires is the political will, uncommon courage and unrelenting determination, and victory will be ours,” the statement added.

News: Nigerians set to pay more for electricity

Nigerians are likely to pay more for electricity when the new gas price recently approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, for power generation takes effect December 1, just a little more than week away.

NERC said on Thursday in Abuja that the review of the regulated price of $1.8 per Million British Thermal Unit (MBTU) for natural gas in 2014 to power plants would definitely take off on December 1.

The vice chairman of the electricity regulatory authority, Mohammed Bello, told a meeting of industry officials on the bi-annual minor review of the Multi Year Tariff Order-2 that the upward review of electricity tariffs was inevitable despite the continued poor electricity supply in the country.
Mr. Bello said apart from gas price, NERC took into consideration other factors such as inflation, foreign exchange rate and power generation capacity, before approving the recent tariff review.
“From what I have seen in the initial report, not much has changed,” Mr. Bello told participants at the meeting.
He described tariffs review as a sensitive issue to electricity consumers, who are always opposed to any tariffs increment without improvement in electricity supply.

The situation at the moment, he said, was that there was a general consensus that the upward review of electricity tariffs now was inevitable and the best way to go.
He said it was agreed that regular payment of electricity charges by consumers when they are due was the only way power would begin to improve.
But, power distribution and generation companies say the increase in the price of natural gas price would definitely necessitate an adjustment on the charge to electricity consumers, as that is a key component in computing tariffs in the power value chain.

A senior official of one of the electricity generation companies who participated in the meeting, who asked that his identity be protected, said it was highly impracticable that an increase in gas price by about 40 per cent per MMBTU would not warrant a corresponding increase in tariffs.
According to the official, in view of the crucial role of gas in power generation, as most power plants current operational in the country were gas-fired, it would be impossible to talk about electricity generation without gas.
A member of NERC’s Tariffs and Rates department, Roland Achor, said the new gas price would come into effect as the regulated gas price was adopted along with the multi-year tariffs order (MYTO) in 2008.

Mr. Achor said key industry regulatory authorities, including the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Federal Ministry of Power in collaboration with NERC, have agreed to a gas price of $2.5 per million MBTU, in addition to transport cost of $0.8 effective December 2014.
On inflation, he said the figure presented by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed a rate of 8.3 percent as of September 30, 2014, with the rate at last review put at 7.8 per cent.

He said though MYTO-2 had assumed that inflation rate would be about 13 per cent, the effective rate today was 8.3 per cent, adding that the data received from the CBN and the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) also gave the Naira exchange rate of N154.75 to $1 as of September 30, 2014, as against N158.57 during the last minor review.
“MYTO-2 benchmarked at N178 to $1 allows a charge of one per cent above the CBN rate to cover letter of credit and other bank charges. The effective exchange rate now is N156.29 to $1 over the next six months,” he explained.

Available data from the Systems Operations of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), according to NERC, that showed available power generation on six months average as at September 30, 2014 was 3,675.41 megawatts (MW).
Mr. Achor who said electricity retail tariff for the period between December 1, 2014 and May 31, 2015 would be based on 3,675MW of generation capacity noted that gross electricity capacity was estimated at 5,556 MW against the last available generation figure of 3,424MW.

News: Suicide bomber kills 15 in Yobe

A suicide bomber who targeted a major Shiite festival in Yobe, northeast Nigeria on Monday killed 15 people and injured some 50 others
“We lost 15 of our members in a suicide blast at the end of our Ashura procession,” said Mustapha Lawan Nasidi, the head of the Shiite community in the targeted city of Potiskum in Yobe state.

He said that 50 people were also injured and claimed that several others died when troops who deployed to the scene opened fire. There was no immediate response from the military.
NigerianEye gathered that the bomber struck when members of the Shiite were gathering to go on a procession to mark the Ashura day
Ashura day is the tenth day of the month of Muharram, the new month of the Islamic calendar.

Shiite Muslims commemorate the day to mourn the death of Hasain Bn Ali, the grand son of Prophet Mohammed who was reportedly killed on that day.
As the faithful were about embarking on the procession, the bomber got into their midst and detonated his bomb, witnesses say.

Potiskum is the largest town outside Damaturu, the Yobe state capital.
Although, the town had witnessed several bomb and gun attacks from members of the Boko Haram sect in the past, it has of recent enjoyed relative peace.

That has now been punctured by today’s bombing.
Efforts to speak with the spokespersons of both the Police and the Joint Task Force, JTf, in the state were unsuccessful.

News REVEALED: Displaced Boko Haram’s victims eat grass to survive..

The Catholic Church has lamented that some of the over 90,000 of its members displaced in the troubled North-East had to feed on grass and insects to survive in their hideouts.
Some, the church added, buried their children killed by hunger and starvation in the bush.

The church, in a press statement by the Director of Information, The Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, Rev. Fr. Gideon Obasogie, on Sunday, said, “A good number of those trapped around the Cameroonian borders are gradually finding their way into Maiduguri. Counting their ordeals, some will tell you how they fed on grass and insects. A group from Pulka community alone buried over 80 children, who took ill in the bush and died.”
He also decried that over 14 parishes have been sacked in the area, with about 20 priests displaced and some members still searching for their loved ones in both Maiduguri and Yola dioceses.

He said, “As a church, we are really going through a severe moment of persecution. Our ecclesiastical circumscription has faced a sharp disintegration. For now, situation is still as before. No improvements whatsoever since our people are still displaced and have no much hope of getting home.”
He noted that the church has spent over N3m on all internally displaced persons at different locations in Maiduguri, explaining that this church took to this because it “must bear witness to the Gospel both in word and deed.”

Obasogie said the visit to the IDPs was “a practical show of that authentic witnessing. They had over 200 sacks of maize, rice, cooking oil, blankets, mosquito nets, rubber buckets, mats, cartons of Maggi, beans, sugar, among others.”
The church encouraged the people to accept all that is happening to them in humility and to see the hand of God at work, even as they are alive. It called on them “not to lose faith, but to use this moment of trial and persecution as a golden opportunity to express abundantly the faith they profess.”

News: Nigeria to train health workers from Liberia, Sierra leone, Guinea And U.S.A over Ebola

Nigera has accepted to train 15 health workers from three West African countries affected by the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Minister of health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said yesterday.
Chukwu told to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja while reacting to a recent request by the United Nations and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to offer the training as part of efforts to combat the disease.

“Nigeria will offer specialised training to the health personnel from the three severely affected West African nations of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia,’’ he said.
According to him, the trainees comprised nine field epidemiologists and six laboratory scientists selected from the affected countries.
The minister said the training, scheduled to take place in Nigeria, would last for three weeks.
Chukwu, however, did not disclose when the training would commence.

He said that the move was part of “a broader measure’’ taken by the Federal Government to assist those countries hit by the virus to contain its spread beyond their borders.
“It is our belief that unless the virus is contained in the most affected countries, Nigeria will continue to be at risk because of its policy of non-restriction of movement across the sub-region.
“I believe that Nigeria should help its neighbours to contain the scourge.
“But for now, we are focusing on helping to build the capacity of the health workers in those countries at our own cost.
“So, Nigeria will not rest until Ebola virus is completely tackled in West Africa,’’ he said.

Chukwu said that on the long-run, countries around the sub-region would be encouraged to train more of its health workers using Nigerian facilities to build a stronger network against common diseases.
The minister said that the Federal Government was also planning “a more comprehensive Masters programme for health personnel from countries in the sub-region that could last for up to two years”.

He said that the effort was geared toward building the sub-region’s capacity to contain deadly diseases such as EVD, HIV and Lassa fever.
Besides, he said the federal government had procured drugs worth N50 million to be donated to Sierra Leone as part of Nigeria’s contribution to curb Ebola virus in the country.
Chukwu said that Nigeria had also outlined a comprehensive programme to help its neighbours to successfully fight the disease.
The minister expressed optimism that West Africa could stem the tide of EVD within the shortest possible time, especially if countries were committed to the sub-regional’s plan of action against the disease.

“Ebola virus in West Africa can be brought under control within the next six to seven months, if all countries in the sub-region work in unison,” Chukwu said.
The minister also called on the countries still plagued by Ebola virus to develop a strong communication and social mobilisation network to help build public confidence.
He said that most people in the affected countries were antagonistic to their governments’ efforts toward ending the scourge because they have nothing to eat in their homes.
“We need to look at the humanitarian aspect of the problem such as food supply.

“You cannot be talking about Ebola virus when people are hungry. So, the campaign has to be a complete package, otherwise it may not yield the desired results,” he said.
The minister on September 29 drummed similar message when he received the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Social Affairs, Mr Mustapha Kaloko, in Abuja

News: Nigeria Military repels attack on Maiduguri and kill 80 bokoharam terrorists

Special Forces of the Nigerian Army yesterday routed hundreds of Boko Haram terrorists including foreign mercenaries who invaded Konduga town about 35 kilometres from Maiduguri with a view to setting up a camp and planning to attack Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. This resulted in the killing of more than 80 insurgents, the military said.
Also, indications have emerged that there was unease and grumbling in the military over a new directive said to be issued by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh suspending all military personnel from proceeding on annual leave, pass (excuse duty) and pilgrimages to either Mecca or Jerusalem.
However, it was gathered that scores of the insurgents who were taken aback that Nigerian soldiers stood their ground and returned heavy fire for same including artillery fire, took to their heels with many sustaining bullet wounds as shown by blood stains leading to the bush around the town.

After the fighting between the insurgents and troops, several dangerous weapons including Anti-Aircraft Guns, GPMGs, Global Positioning Systems, and 30 AK 47 rifles were recovered from the camp. Three Hilux jeeps mounted with automatic technical weapons were also recovered.
Confirming the development in a statement signed by Colonel Timothy Antigha, Army headquarters said, “At about 5.30 am today (yesterday), Boko Haram terrorists launched a massive attack on Konduga town, about 35 kilometres from Maiduguri.

“After about three hours of fierce fighting, Nigerian troops routed the Boko Haram fighting force of over a hundred terrorists.
“Further to the staggering loss of men, Boko Haram also suffered extensive losses in equipment.
“Specifically, three Hilux and one Buffalo vehicles with mounted Anti-aircraft guns, three General Purpose Machine guns, over 30 AK 47 rifles and two global positioning systems have been recovered”.

“Four Nigerian soldiers were wounded in action. The entire area is still being combed for terrorists who may have escaped with bullet wounds”. Morale of troops remains very high”.
Unease as military suspends annual leave, pilgrimage for officers
It was gathered that the suspension of annual leave and pilgrimage for officers were aimed primarily at dissuading officers and soldiers of the three forces of the Army, Navy and Air force from abdicating their duty post especially now that the war against terrorists in the North East is assuming frightening dimensions.

It was gathered further that new and unforeseen happenings in the ongoing insurgency battle like desertions by soldiers, and those who resort to escapist tactics of all sorts to avoid deployment to the theater of battle necessitated the directive.
The source revealed that the directive which was communicated to all the services, army, navy and air force takes immediate effect.

Noting that the signal issuing the directive gave the date of commencement as ‘immediate effect’, the source said the signal cancelled all initially approved leave, passes and request for pilgrimages while those already enjoying any vacation have been recalled to their duty posts.
“Failure to heed the directive, of course, will be met with appropriate sanctions in line with the terms and conditions of service of armed forces statutes” .

PDP governors advice Jonathan: Don’t declare 2015 ambition yet

President Goodluck Jonathan has been advised to tarry a little, before attempting to declare his second term ambition.
Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, stated this at a meeting they had with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday night.
Though the governors were in support of the President’s bid for re-election, they said the nation’s mood was not ripe for such a declaration.
Investigations by our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday and Wednesday showed that the meeting considered the plight of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls and security challenges facing the country.
It was learnt that based on these two major issues, the governors asked the President to study the mood of the nation more before considering an open declaration for re-election.
Two of the governors, who were at the meeting and spoke with our correspondent separately, said that the President was advised to either visit Chibok or in the alternative, allow the parents of the kidnapped schoolgirls visit him at the Presidential Villa.
One of them said, “The meeting was a painstaking one. We considered so many things. We talked about so many issues. While it was true we spoke about how to reposition the party and the gains we are making across the country ahead of the 2015 general elections, we also considered the probability of when the President could make his open declaration.
“Some of my colleagues argued that the time was ripe, but others felt that the mood of the country and even the international community are not favourable.
“We argued that if the President declares now, it will be seen as being politically bad and not in the best interest of the nation and that it could be termed as being against the spirit of fatherhood.”
He said based on this, the President was “advised to meet with the parents of the girls, even if some are going to see it as coming a bit late. It is better done now instead of allowing it go into history that the President did not visit or invite them for a meeting.”
Apart from this, another governor said that the meeting also noticed that the Independent National Electoral Commission had yet to release the guidelines for the election.
“We know that the campaigns are for him and part of efforts to strengthen the image of the government and that of the President. The position does not have this opportunity,” he added.

News: Police prevent mob attack, as mysterious bird turns into old woman in Lagos[video]

CLICK HERE TO WATCH AND DOWNLOAD THE VIDEO An elderly woman escaped lynching on Wednesday after being accused of being a bird and witch in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State. According to residents of Ojo Road, where the purported transformation took place, the woman was a black bird before suddenly turning into a human being. Hundreds of residents were said to have gathered around the woman to lynch her. An eyewitness, Chike, said he was sitting in front of a compound with his girlfriend when they saw three black birds flying. He said it seemed as if the birds were involved in a fight and as he was watching, suddenly, one of the birds fell into a moving van belonging to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company while the other two flew away. He said, “The bird suddenly turned to an old woman of about 80. People were shocked as they saw the woman rolling on the road and blood gushing out from her forehead. “When the crowd was interrogating her, she said she was a witch and that she came from Ibadan for a meeting in Lagos but as they were returning home they missed their way and wasted so much time hovering in the area till daybreak. The woman claimed she fell because she was tired of flying.” It was learnt that as the woman was about to be lynched, the traditional ruler of Layeni Community, Baale Rafiu Olayeni, arrived the scene and pleaded with the angry people not to take laws into their hands. Olayeni told our correspondent that he called the Divisional Police Officer of Layeni Police Division, CSP Chijioke Ndu, and he drafted anti- robbery policemen to the scene, rescued the woman and took her to the station. Hundreds of spectators were said to have followed them to the station. The traditional leader said, “People told me the woman fell down as a bird but I did not believe them. I had to rescue the old woman before the mob lynches her as they claimed she was a witch. Sometimes the reasoning of old people could be compared to that of a small child because of the effects of old age.” At the station, however, the police found it difficult to control the mammoth crowd that had come to see the alleged witch. It was learnt that the DPO had to call for reinforcement from Ajegunle and Amukoko divisions before he could handle the crowd as some people were bent on lynching the woman. The policemen were said to have fired tear gas at the crowd and dispersed them from the station. It was learnt that the woman was subsequently transferred to the Area B Command in Apapa for further investigation. It was gathered that this was the seventh lynching the police had prevented this month. Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, could not be reached for comment.

News: President Jonathan sacks Sanusi Lamido, appoints Godwin Emefiele as new CBN Gov

President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed managing director of Zenith Bank,Mr Godwin Emefiele as the new governor of Central Bank. Information reaching us say the president has forwarded Mr Emefiele’s name to the Senate for approval. He has also nominated Mr Adelabu Adebayo, an Executive Director at First Bank as Deputy Governor of the Apex Bank. SanusiIt can be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday sacked Mallam Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati said Jonathan had found out that Sanusi’s tenure as the CBN governor has been characterised by acts of financial recklessness and misconduct which are inconsistent with his administration’s vision. However, many Nigerians believe the CBN governor was axed because he exposed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, as an harbinger of corruption and financial mismanagement, diverting huge federal revenues accruing to the nation from the sale of crude oil. Mr. Sanusi says as much as $20 billion oil money is missing. Sanusi however on his arrival from Niger promised to challenge Mr President in court concerning his sack. In his words.. |"I will not go back to it. I think it will be in the interest of the institution for the courts to establish once and for all if the president has the powers to do this. If it is not challenged, the next Central Bank Governor cannot be independent with fear of being suspended by a politician. I do plan to have the courts confirm if indeed that authority exists and I will challenge it" NigerianEYE also reported that some officials of the State Security Service, SSS, seized the travelling documents of suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, shortly after he arrived Lagos from Niger, where he had gone to attend a meeting of governors of central banks in the West African sub-region. He was released later, while his travelling documents remains seized.

Senator Ita Giwa Buys New Mansion Beside Her Banana Island House[pics]

The highly connected and gloriously stylish former Senator doesn’t do things by half measures. Everyone that cares to know, know that she’s well heeled and that she owns an apartment to overlooks the Ocean at Ocean Parade inside that billionaires enclave known to all as Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos. CNN once carried a report stating that Banana Island is one of the most expensive real estate spot or neighborhood in the world, even Forbes agreed with that fact. Stating that it is at par with the likes of Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan or La Jolla in San Diego, California, USA or even the 7th Arrondissement in Paris, France. A peek at her apartment a long time ago spoke of class and style. Not to lie its the kind of apartment one would love to own. We heard that the old Ocean Parade apartment reportedly cost her several millions equivalent of about $1.4 million dollars, this is chicken feed for the ever stylish Mma Bakassi who doesn’t do things in small measure, who has now gotten another apartment in the compound next to Ocean Parade called BellaVista. Ocean Parade from what we could deduce is said to be owned by the Chagourys. Bella Vista Bellavista is one of the several sprawling properties in Banana Island. It is described as a 3 to 4 bedroom waterfront, luxury and fully serviced apartments. It comes as a 3 bedroom detached or a super luxury 4-bedroom penthouse, with BQ, pool, gym, lawn-tennis court, squash court, in fact all the works. As at the last check, apartments inside Bellavista goes for something between $80,000 & $125,000 dollars per annum and to buy outright from about N200,000,000 million plus. Mma Bakassi’s own said to be on the 9th floor is said to set her back by about $3million dollars. To make the place fit for herself, she’s said to have totally transformed the apartment into a sort of palace. With all the trappings needed to make it extra luxurious. The former Senator is said to have sold her old apartment at the Ocean Parade. We hear several top honchos live there and unconfirmed reports says that a particular state chief executive owns several empty apartments on some of the blocks. Just like the name Bella Vista means – Beautiful sight, this blocks of several apartments is a beauty to behold and a money making edifice. According to the gist, Mma Bakassi got the apartment a long while ago and only just started being visible there not too long ago. [Source: Maestro]

News: We will end Boko Haram violence in April - Defence chief

The new Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, has assured the country that the military will bring the Boko Haram insurgency in the country to an end by April this year.
