Ogun State government has announced the cancellation of this year’s Children’s Day and Democracy Day jamborees.
This, it said, was in solidarity with the clamour for the release of schoolgirls abducted in Chibok, Borno State, since April 14.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, the cancellation of Democracy Day celebration is to identify with parents of the abducted girls and for the residents of the state to spend the day in a sober reflection and prayer for eventual release of the girls.
“In deference to the current mood of the nation over the abducted girls at the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, Ogun State has stepped down activities on Thursday May 29, 2014 to mark Democracy Day.
“This decision is taken by government to identify with the parents of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted over a month ago by the Boko Haram sect.”
The state government, however, stressed that it would continue to take steps at improving the security of lives and property of citizenry across the state.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Elizabeth Sonubi, also said the Children’s Day would be dedicated to praying for the release of the Chibok girls, whose whereabouts still remained unknown.
Sonubi, while addressing a press conference commemorating the third anniversary of the present administration in the state, said the children would be asking the Federal Government to put more efforts into ensuring the release of the abducted girls.
She said what the ministry planned for the day, “is more of prayer, more of counselling for these children, so that they will know what is going on and to be vigilant as well.”

The wife of the Governor Hajiya Nana Shettima and the Women Affairs Hajiya Inna Galadima enjoined women and children to offer special prayers on that day because God accepts their prayers quickly in view of their love and compassion for humanity.
Meanwhile the wife of the Executive Governor of Borno State and Founder SWOT Foundation Hajiya Nana Shettima also congratulates the New Chief Imam of Borno Zannah Laisu Ibrahim Imam over his new appointment as the Chief Imam of Borno.
In a congratulatory message the Hajiya Nana Shettima said, his appointment is a clear attestation of his outstanding qualities, reputation, discipline, experience and respect for constituted authorities.
She prayed Allah to guide and protect the new chief imam and enjoined him to emulate the exemplary leadership qualities of his late father Imam Ibrahim Ahmad.
The wife of the Governor appealed to the new chief Imam to pray fervently for peace to prevail in the State and the country at large.
